Club de Cuervos 

 

Club De Cuervos is the first Spanish-language Netflix original series. It is about two siblings, Salvador “Chava” Iglesias Jr (Luis Gerardo Méndez) and his sister Isabel (Mariana Treviño) The father of the two was the owner of a Mexican soccer team called Los Cuervos of Nuevo Toledo. When their dad dies suddenly, a decision must be made to choose who will be the new president. Isabel battles it out with those who believe her brother is the best option, even though she is more knowledgeable about the team and soccer. Meanwhile, Chava is spoiled and tends to spend too much money, especially with his outrageous ideas.

 

La Casa De Las Flores 

 

La Casa De Las Flores follows a wealthy family of two sisters and one brother, whose mother owns one of the most successful flower shops in Mexico called La Casa De Las Flores (which translates to House of Flowers, literally). This is a comedy full of satire. The first episode starts with a death by suicide but follows more laughs, even if it sounds morbid. Many ridiculous things happen in the comedy and it’s unafraid to. Their sophisticated mother smokes weed secretly and a theme that is predominant in the series is sexual fluidity.

 

Monarca 

 

For those who enjoy thrillers, this series co-produced by Salma Hayek is a must-watch. Monarca, which translates to someone being the king or queen of a hierarchy, exudes creativity and award-worthy acting. Ana Maria (Irene Azuela) is a journalist who fled Jalisco, Mexico where she is originally from, because she disagreed with the way her father handled his Tequila business. When her father passes away, Ana and her two brothers fight over who will take over the company. The show talks about what it’s like to live between both American and and Mexican cultures. The series also talks about social class discrimination in Mexico, slut shaming, and sexual assault, prejudice, corruption and more. 

 

Unstoppable 

 

In Unstoppable, three very different best friends take a road trip to Oaxaca. It focuses on Rocio (Bárbara López), a disciplined neuroscience student who has her future planned; Vera (Tessa Ía), a fashion journalist who is spoiled but also good hearted; and Carlota (Lucía Uribe), the feminist of the group but is also insecure of her talent as a poet. As the three flee they encounter Marcela, a girl who does not have the same privilege these three do. After Vera doesn’t agree to give her a ride, Marcela assaults them and demands them to take her where she needs to. This series is a coming of age story about the struggles millennial women live with today such as body image, confidence, and sexual assault.

 

On My Block 

 

Four friends from a rough neighborhood of Los Angeles navigate high school, love, gang culture, and family dynamics in Netflix's dramedy On My Block. “When we started this process we had a lot of stories to tell,” co-creator Eddie Gonzalez tells Teen Vogue about the highly-lauded show. “And it would have been really sad if we ended this after two seasons. In our mind when we sat there, there were tent poles. There were places we wanted to go.” In its third season, Monse (Sierra Capri), Cesar (Diego Tinoco), Ruby (Jason Genao), and Jamal (Brett Gray) are coerced into finding a missing gang leader while also dealing with parental drama and romantic relationships. 

 

Luis Miguel The Series 

 

This series is based on the life of the famous Mexican pop singer, Luis Miguel, whose life and childhood was not as glamorous as it led up to be. Around age 11 his dad obsessively made him practice singing in order to get gigs that would get them out of poverty. Luis Miguel then quickly becomes the teen star Mexico wanted. As he got older the young heartthrob was the crush of many and struggled to keep his relationships private and out of scandal. Luis Miguel is played by Diego Boneta. 

 

La Reina Del Sur 

 

Teresa Mendoza (played by Kate Del Castillo) becomes the most powerful drug trafficker in Spain. Teresa was used to a semi tranquil life in Mexico until her boyfriend is seemingly executed and she is forced to run away to escape the same fate. She then arrives in Spain where she attempts to start from scratch but life brings her back into the drug business she seemingly cannot escape from.

 

One Day At A Time

 

One Day at a Time is about Penelope (Justina Machado), a recently separated, former military mom. She's trying to navigate a new single life while raising her outspoken teenage daughter (Isabella Gomez) and pre-teen son, with her old school Cuban-born mom Lydia (Rita Moreno). The show is a classic situational comedy with themes of immigration, sexism, family loyalty, mental illness, tradition versus new, and much more. Season 1-3 are on Netflix, season 4 is on Pop TV. 

 

Jane The Virgin 

 

CW’s award-winning telenovela-esque series tells the story of Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez), who vowed to abstain from sex until marriage and accidentally is artificially inseminated and becomes pregnant. The plot is an adaptation of the Venezuelan telenovela Juana la Virgen. Drama surrounds the Miami-based writer through many plot twists over the seasons. The show was ahead of its time when it premiered in 2014 and tackled issues like immigration, classism and racism.

 

Diary of a Future President 

 

This family-friendly sitcom follows 12-year-old Cuban-American middle schooler Elena Cañero-Reed (Tess Romero) on her path to the White House. The presidential hopeful is determined to make a difference. Executive producer Gina Rodriguez has a recurring guest-starring role as the adult version of Elena.
